Call for Papers Open for ASTM International’s Second Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture of Additively Manufactured Materials and Components

Papers are invited for the Second Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture of Additively Manufactured Materials and Components, to be held May 10, 2023, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, Colorado, U.S. The event is sponsored by ASTM International’s committee E08 on fatigue and fracture and will be held in conjunction with the committee’s May standards development meetings.

The fatigue and fracture behavior of components produced using various AM processes are not fully characterized and understood. For these reasons, this symposium will provide a forum for the consideration and discussion surrounding the application of existing and potential development of new fatigue and fracture standards for AM materials, as they become more common in aerospace, ground vehicles, and medical devices.

Topics for this symposium include:

  • Applicability of existing fatigue and fracture test methods to AM materials
  • Development of new fatigue and fracture test methods and/or specimens for AM materials
  • Fatigue and fracture behavior of components fabricated using AM
  • Residual stress effects
  • Effects of process and design parameters on fatigue and fracture behavior
  • Process optimization to improve fatigue performance of AM materials
  • Nondestructive evaluation of components fabricated using AM
  • Characterization of internal microdiscontinuities
  • Correlation between component and test specimen behavior
  • Effect of surface quality and finish
  • Build direction and layer orientation microstructure variation and anisotropy
  • Component volumetric and size influences
  • Effect of post processing (including HIP) on fatigue and fracture properties
  • Statistical nature of fatigue and fracture processes for AM components
  • AM build simulation and damage analysis techniques
  • Multiaxial deformation and loading of AM components

To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 2 to 3-page extended abstract using the ASTM Extended Abstracts template provided in the ASTM Abstract Submission Portal no later than December 30, 2022.

Additional information is available from technical chairs Dr. Markus Heinimann (markus.heinimann@howmet.com) and Dr. M.R. Mitchell (mrmitchell@illinoisalumni.org).
