Organization of a New Standards Development Activity for Captive Animal Photography and Videography Within ASTM Will Not Proceed at This Time

The scheduled Aug. 23, 2010, organizational meeting on the formation of a new ASTM International activity regarding the development of standards for captive animal photography and videography has been cancelled.

The intent of this activity, with support from the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), was to address the ambiguity that presently exists regarding the ethical responsibilities involved in maintaining, photographing and publishing photos of captive animals.

“ILCP and the National Geographic Society are gaining awareness on this issue through means such as articles in their publications and speaking engagements. Given this reality, attempting to organize an activity to develop full consensus standards at this time is inconsistent with the needs and direction of several critical stakeholder groups,” explains Pat Picariello, ASTM director of New Activities.

The ASTM organizational process depends totally upon stakeholder interest and support. This collaboration results in relevant standards that are globally recognized and broadly applied around the world.
