Stephen Luko, statistician at Pratt & Whitney, Division of United Technologies, in East Hartford, Conn., is the new chairman of ASTM International Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics.  The committee consists of approximately 230 members who oversee more than 20 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards.

A resident of Terryville, Conn., Luko joined ASTM International in 1999.  He works on several E11 groups, and is the current chairman of Subcommittee E11.91 on Planning.  Committee E11 has recognized Luko's contributions with two Awards of Appreciation, in 2004 and 2007.

After receiving an associate degree in science from Hartford State Technical College in 1981, Luko began his career at Critikon Inc. in Cheshire, Conn., as project scientist/quality engineer.  He went on to receive a B.S. in mathematics from Charter Oak State College, New Britain, Conn., and an M.A. in mathematics from Central Connecticut State University while holding the position of statistician at the Torrington Company in Waterbury, Conn.  He joined the staff at Pratt & Whitney in 2001. 

Luko is an adjunct professor in the department of mathematics at both the University of Hartford and Tunxis Community College in Farmington, Conn. 

Outside of ASTM International, Luko is a member the American Society for Quality, where he is a senior member and Certified Quality Engineer and Certified Reliability Engineer, the  American Statistical Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
