Ian R. Chin Receives ASTM International Walter C. Voss Award

ASTM International has honored Ian R. Chin, vice president and senior principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. in Chicago, Ill., with the 2007 Walter C. Voss Award for his outstanding contributions to knowledge and advances in the field of building technology.

A member of ASTM International for more than 20 years, Chin serves on Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, where he is member at large on Subcommittee C12.90; C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units, where he is first vice chairman on the main committee and vice chair of the C15.90 subcommittee; C18 on Dimension Stone; C24 on Building Seals and Sealants; and E06 on Performance of Buildings.  In addition, he participates on various task groups and is the author of many special technical publications (STPs) on the subject of masonry.  In 2005, Committee C15 presented Chin with the ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. 

Chin, who holds a bachelor of architecture in design and a master of science in structural engineering, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. since 1978.  He is a licensed architect and professional engineer in several states, and a licensed structural engineer in Illinois.  His work focuses on the investigation and repair design of problems in exterior facades on buildings and the investigation of failures in building structures. 

A past chairman of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, Chin is also a member of  the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois, and the city of Chicago's Committee on Standards and Tests.
