David Byer Receives ASTM International R.A. Glenn Award

David Byer, senior manager of quality control and contract labs at Peabody Energy in St. Louis, Mo., is the 2007 recipient of the R.A. Glenn Award from ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke. This annual award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the development of ASTM standards relating to coal and coke.

Byer is a resident of Troy, Ill.

An ASTM International member since 1985, Byer currently serves as member-at-large on the main committee of D05 and is secretary of Subcommittee D05.07 on Physical Characteristics of Coal.  He is also active in several other D05 subcommittees and task groups. 

Byer graduated from Southern Indiana University, Evansville, Ind., in 1979 with a B.S. in biology.  He has held various positions at Peabody since joining the company in 1984, first as   lab manager at North Antelope Mine, then as quality control manager at Powder River Coal Co. before assuming his current position in 1999.  As senior manager of quality control and contract labs, Byer works on coal mining quality control, coal lab management and coal and coke standards development. 

In addition to ASTM International, Byer is a member of the American Society for Quality.
