Albert V. Brandemarte, Jr., Receives ASTM International Award of Merit

An ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow honor the contributions of Albert V. Brandemarte, Jr., to ASTM Committee E04 on Metallography. Brandemarte, chief metallographer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Div. (NSWCCD), West Bethesda, Md., received the award for his outstanding leadership in the committee and his contributions to standardizing metallographic procedures and practice. The award is the highest ASTM recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., Brandemarte now resides in Annapolis, Md.

A former E04 main committee chair, first vice chair and second vice chair, Brandemarte currently leads Subcommittee E04.01 on Specimen Preparation. He has been an ASTM International member since 1989 and works on several E04 subcommittees. Among his standards-writing contributions to the committee, Brandemarte was responsible for overseeing the overhaul of one of the committee's most cited standards: E 45, Test Methods for Determining the Inclusion Content of Steel. In addition, he has furthered the use of E04 standards by both industry and government.

Brandemarte, an ASTM International member since 1989, has also received E04 Awards of Appreciation in 1998 and 2002, and the L.L. Wyman Memorial Award in 2002.

Brandemarte began his career as a metallographer at Bethlehem Steel's Homer Research Laboratories and led the metallography and X-ray diffraction laboratories before joining the Naval Surface Warfare Center (then the David Taylor Research Center) in Annapolis, Md. In 1990 he received a David Taylor Research Center Employee of the Year Award for his efforts in modernizing the metallography laboratory and introducing ASTM International standard procedures. In his current role at NSWCCD's Metallography Laboratory, Brandemarte assists with fleet-related failure analyses and qualification of new materials for naval applications.
