Gary H. Bray, Ph.D., section head of Mechanical Metallurgy and Corrosion at Alcoa Technical Center in Alcoa Center, Pa., has received an ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow. Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture cited Bray for his exceptional and sustained technical and leadership contributions to developing and maintaining standard test methods for measuring fracture toughness.

Bray lives in Murrysville, Pa.

An ASTM International member since 1994, Bray serves on several E08 subcommittees, and he has recently completed a six-year term as chairman of E08.07 on Linear-Elastic Fracture. Bray is also a member of Committee B07 on Light Metals and Alloys, where he previously chaired Subcommittee B07.05 on Light Metals Testing. Bray, who has contributed to the revision of a number of E08 standards, has also been a regular presenter at ASTM-sponsored symposia and has had his scholarly work published in ASTM Special Technical Publications and the Journal of ASTM International.

In his career, Bray has focused on the development, evaluation and introduction of new aluminum alloys for commercial aircraft applications, as well as fatigue and fracture testing and failure analysis. He joined the Alcoa Technical Center as a senior engineer in 1992 and assumed his current position in 2005.

After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a B.S. in materials engineering, Bray took a position as a materials and process engineer with McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, Calif. While at McDonnell Douglas, he earned his M.S. in engineering from California State University-Long Beach. He then returned to graduate school full time and earned his Ph.D. in materials science from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
