ASTM International George R. Irwin Medal Awarded to Anthony R. Ingraffea, Ph.D.

Anthony R. Ingraffea, Ph.D., the Dwight C. Baum Professor of Engineering and director of the Cornell Fracture Group at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., has won the ASTM International George R. Irwin Medal. The award, given by ASTM Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture, honors Ingraffea's pioneering and outstanding contributions to the advanced computational simulation of fatigue and fracture processes and the resulting improved understanding necessary for practical applications of fracture mechanics to the assessment of integrity in engineering structures.

Ingraffea is a resident of Ithaca, N.Y.

An ASTM International member since 1977, Ingraffea serves on several subcommittees in Committee E08, and he is also a member of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.

In 1977, Ingraffea became a professor at Cornell. In this position, he currently focuses on structural mechanics, computational and experimental fracture mechanics, and engineering education. He previously had worked for two years as a structural engineer for Grumman Aerospace Corp. and volunteered in Venezuela for two years as a member of the Peace Corps.

Coauthor of more than 200 papers with his students, Ingraffea researches computer simulation and physical testing of fracture processes and has investigated the use of interactive computer graphics in computational mechanics. He has received numerous teaching awards at Cornell.

A fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and co-editor-in-chief of Engineering Fracture Mechanics, Ingraffea is also a member of the American Concrete Institute, the American Academy of Mechanics, and the American Rock Mechanics Association.

Ingraffea earned his B.A. in aerospace engineering from the University of Notre Dame, his M.S. in civil engineering from the Polytechnic University of New York, and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
