Representatives from one of the world’s leading standards organizations will host textile-standards trainings and meet with government and industry leaders in Vietnam Sept. 10-14.
The main focus of ASTM International’s “Vietnam Road Show” will be two two-day trainings in Ho Chi Minh City focused on a dozen key test methods, practices, and guides for textiles. In general, these standards support product quality, performance, and strength.
The courses are aimed at anyone involved in purchasing, testing, or evaluating fabrics. The first session – which will be simultaneously translated into Korean – aims to train lab managers and managers of suppliers from Korean companies that have textiles facilities in Vietnam. The second session – translated into Vietnamese – will help train lab technicians and other Vietnamese professionals at those facilities.
Ellen Roaldi, a senior technical consulting specialist at testing company Bureau Veritas, will serve as instructor. She has nearly three decades of expertise and is an active member of ASTM International’s textiles committee (D13).
Korean textiles companies with operations in Vietnam requested these trainings last year. The companies specifically cited the need to learn and apply these standards in order to engage in trade with countries such as the United States.
The course – at the Saigon Sofitel – is free but space is limited and registration is required by contacting YoungKook Kim (ykim@astm.org) by Aug. 22. The Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the South and Middle of Vietnam (KOCHAM) as well as testing/research institutes FITI and KOTITI are supporting the event.
Teresa Cendrowska, vice president of global cooperation, and Tim Brooke, vice president of laboratory services, are coordinating these activities. The two will also visit the Hanoi-based Vietnamese national standards body (STAMEQ), one of ASTM International’s 110 Memorandum of Understanding partners. The two also anticipate meeting with petroleum and concrete/cement companies, laboratories, and research institutes in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
