Steven R. Westbrook, principal scientist in the Fuels and Lubricants Research Division of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, has been recognized with an ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow, the highest society recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants cited Westbrook "for the dedicated leadership and tenacious pursuit of excellence in establishing standards and publishing technical information for ASTM International Subcommittee D02.E0 on Burner, Diesel, Non-Aviation Gas Turbine, and Marine Fuels."

Westbrook lives in San Antonio, Texas.

The current chair of D02.E0, Westbrook participates actively in the work of other D02 groups and has made major contributions to a number of standards and ASTM publications. One example is Westbrook's leadership in organizing a forum on biodiesel that has led to publication of a new standard, D6751-07, Specification for Biodiesel Fuel Blend Stock (B100) for Middle Distillate Fuels, and a group working on similar documents. D02 has previously recognized Westbrook with an Award of Excellence and an Award of Appreciation.

Outside ASTM International, Westbrook is the current chair of the International Association for Stability, Handling and Use of Liquid Fuels.

The year after Westbrook graduated with a B.S. in chemistry from Texas Lutheran University, he began working at the Southwest Research Institute as a research scientist. Westbrook, who also holds an M.B.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio, assumed his current position in 2005. His career concentration at the Institute has been the analysis and quality of liquid fuels and lubricants.
