ASTM International President Katharine Morgan announced that four graduate students each won $10,000 scholarships for their graduate studies in fields where technical standards play a crucial role. This year’s winners were chosen from a competitive pool of 25 applications. “These students will use standards to expand scientific knowledge in a wide range of fields: additive manufacturing,…, , studying materials engineering. He is engaging with topics related to two committees: aerospace and aircraft ( F07 ) and fasteners ( F16 ). Anthony Marletta of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is an aspiring occupational health and safety expert. He plans to help develop standards through the pedestrian/walkway safety and footwear committee ( F13 ). Materials science student Andrew Tonigan of…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org Release #10607

A new ASTM International test method aims to help improve aircraft decontamination processes. The new standard (E3092 ) was developed by ASTM International’s committee on pesticides, antimicrobials, and alternative control agents ( E35 ). The test method describes how to measure inactivation of, Bacillus, spores using hot, humid air., Bacillus, spores can come from insecticidal applications, natural environmental contamination or contamination from a terrorist attack., Bacillus, spores are also used as biological indicators to measure the success of decontamination processes. “The technology and the tests were developed for aircraft decontamination,” says ASTM International member Alice Young. “However, the standard has broad application to sensitive material decontamination not related to aircraft as well.” Young notes that the standard could potentially be modified…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #10599

ASTM International’s committee on pedestrian/walkway safety and footwear (F13) recently held a four-day workshop to test instruments that measure the risks of people slipping while walking on various surfaces. According to organizers, this could help researchers, manufacturers, and others looking to improve walkway safety. The instruments – called walkway tribometers – assess slip resistance of…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Molly Lynyak, tel +1.610.832.9743; mlynyak@astm.org Release #10595

A new ASTM International standard will allow users to grow a standardized bacterial biofilm that can be used in the efficacy evaluation of antimicrobial disinfectants. The new standard (soon to be published as E3161) was developed by the ASTM International committee on pesticides, antimicrobials, and alternative control agents ( E35 ). According to committee members, bacteria may grow and…, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or, Staphylococcus aureus, biofilm that can be used to evaluate the efficacy of antimicrobial disinfectants. A first-of-its-kind ASTM International guide outlines the many test methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of antifungal-treated articles. While other standards have been developed for antimicrobial-treated articles, the new guide is the first of its kind to focus solely on antifungal test methods, according to member Daniel Price, the director of microbiology at Interface Inc. He says that…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #10525

A new ASTM International standard will help measure the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents at preventing biofilms, which are thin films of bacteria that adhere to textiles and other products. The test method will show a treated material’s resistance to microbial colonization and subsequent biofilm formation relative to an untreated (control) sample. The standard is specifically designed to…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #10522
