ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) has approved a new standard that will be used to identify microplastics in environmental water samples. According to ASTM member and microplastics subcommittee lead William Robberson, P.E., the new test method ( D8401 ) is the first standard that will identify plastic in the environment, and the first that can be used synergistically with other ASTM…, Media Inquiries:, Gavin O’Reilly, tel +1.610.832.9618; goreilly@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11834 ###

ASTM International has announced the launch of a foundational level eLearning certificate program on requirements for medical-related professionals within the cannabis and hemp industries. The program is now available through the MM411 Learning Center. The new program is based on ASTM’s guide for requirements for medical-related professionals within the cannabis and hemp industries ( D8452 ). It…, Media Inquiries:, Gavin O’Reilly, tel +1.610.832.9618; goreilly@astm.org Release #11779 ###

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) has approved a new standard that will help water producers and users identify and quantify bacteria in potable (drinking, dental, and bottled water) as well as nonpotable water (cooling towers). Heterotrophic bacteria count (HPC) determines the overall number of bacteria in a water sample, allowing water system managers and water treatment…, Media Inquiries:, Gavin O’Reilly, tel +1.610.832.9618; goreilly@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11735 ###

Two proposed standards from ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) are devoted to different aspects of water quality. The first proposed standard ( WK68866 ) will provide a screening method to assess contaminants in water samples prior to a more detailed analysis. If approved, this standard will cover the determination of adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF) in waters and waste waters that can…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11643 ###

ASTM International’s light sport aircraft committee ( F37 ) has approved a new standard that addresses aeroelasticity requirements of light sport aircraft. Aeroelasticity refers to the interaction of aerodynamic, inertial, and elastic forces that emerge during the relative movement of air and aircraft. According to ASTM member Rian Johnson, the new specification ( F3619 ) defines the standards…, Media Inquiries:, Gavin O’Reilly, tel +1.610.832.9618; goreilly@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Joe Koury, tel +1.610.832.9804; jkoury@astm.org Release #11642 ###

ASTM’s water committee ( D19 ) has approved a new standard that will help ensure compliance with drinking water quality requirements, minimize environmental impact, and protect public health. The new standard, published as D8431 , is based on the HORIBA A-TEEM spectroscopy technique. It will be used at treatment plants for drinking water as a first line of defense for detecting petroleum product…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11506 ###,

A new ASTM International standard provides a test method for finding low concentrations of nitrosamines, a suspected type of carcinogen, in water. The standard ( D8456 ) was developed by ASTM’s water committee ( D19 ). Nitrosamines exist in low concentrations in water, foods, vegetables, and dairy products. According to ASTM International member William Lipps, this standard presents a relatively…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11486 ###

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) is working to reinstate a standard used in the desalination (the removal of salts and other materials) of seawater. The proposed standard ( WK80178 ) will replace a discontinued standard using the Stiff and Davis stability index for reverse osmosis. The Stiff and Davis index is an easy way to calculate calcium carbonate scaling tendencies in brines.…

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) is developing a proposed standard that water quality laboratories will use to help ensure that environmental regulations for water are met. According to ASTM International member Linxi Chen, the proposed standard will provide an early warning prediction from raw source water of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). DBPs are cancer-causing contaminants in…

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) has approved a new standard that provides an easy and accurate culture method for detecting, Legionella pneumophila, , the primary bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease. Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially lethal pneumonia contracted from the inhalation of, L. pneumophila, bacteria that has been aerosolized by contaminated water sources such as showers, pools and spas, or cooling towers. ASTM International member Jody Frymire notes that more effective water management practices can protect against potential Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks. “Laboratories, building owners, and water treaters can use the new standard to perform routine monitoring of, L. pneumophila, to evaluate whether water management plans are effective in removing the pathogenic bacteria and adequately reducing risk,” says Frymire. The new standard ( D8429 ) describes a method for detecting and quantifying, L. pneumophila, to meet water management requirements. Such requirements are necessary to regularly validate that treatment and control measures are effective in potable and non-potable water associated with industrial, commercial, healthcare, and residential settings. Frymire says the new method is easier to perform and provides faster results than other methods. This effort directly relates to the United…
