ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has honored Salvatore Rand, Ph.D., a consultant and principal of Rand Associates in Fort Myers, Fla., with the Lowrie B. Sargent Jr. Award. The committee cited Rand for his outstanding and dedicated leadership to standards development complemented by his technical understanding and communications abilities particularly in Subcommittee D02.A0 on Gasoline and Oxygenated Fuels.

An ASTM fellow and Award of Merit recipient, Rand serves on a number of D02 technical standards-writing groups and has been involved with the committee's work since 1980. He is a past vice-chairman of D02 and past chairman of Subcommittee D02.05 on Properties of Fuels, Petroleum Coke and Carbon Material. For his contributions he has previously been recognized with the George V. Dyroff Award of Honorary D02 Membership and the Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement. In addition to D02, Rand is a member of the ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations and a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society.

A graduate of Fordham University with a B.S. in chemistry, Rand earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. For much of his career, Rand was a senior consultant with Texaco Research Lab in Beacon, N.Y. Throughout his professional work, he has focused on fuels research and fuels test laboratory management.
