Registration Now Open for ASTM International’s Beard Conference: Asbestos Terminology

Registration is now open for ASTM International’s Beard Conference: Asbestos Terminology, to be held Apr. 10-12, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event is sponsored by ASTM International’s air quality committee (D22) and will be held in conjunction with the committee’s standards development meetings.

This terminology summit will feature two days of presentations and moderated discussions. The conference organizing committee has pulled together a wide range of experts to present comprehensive talks on a range of related subjects that include:

  • The geologic sources and early industry origins of asbestos definitions,
  • The evolution of terms such as exposure and risk, as public health regulations started to take the "definition spotlight," and the static nature of 29CFR and 40CFR definitions,
  • Impact of the NIOSH Roadmap of 2010,
  • Litigation and the terminology landscape,
  • The latest in medical mechanism dynamics towards asbestos related diseases,
  • Toxicology and the role of size, shape, and chemistry,
  • Epidemiological trends and how previous studies may have been limited,
  • The sizes, shapes, and mineral classifications of what is found in airborne environments, the built environment, and tissue and pathology samples, and how these are studied, examined, and characterized in the laboratory,
  • And laboratory perspective of what is seen under the microscope, and other analysis issues, i.e., detection limits, counting criteria, holes in the data.
