Ralph M. Paroli, Ph.D., acting director general for the Metrology Research Center, National Research Council of Canada (NRC), was awarded the 2021 ASTM International William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award.

The Cavanaugh Memorial Award honors W.T. Cavanaugh, CEO of ASTM International from 1970 to 1985, who established ASTM International as the world leader in developing and disseminating voluntary standards.

Paroli was recognized for his outstanding service within the roofing and cannabis communities that has led to the global utilization of standards and improvement of product quality and consumer safety.

“Ralph has been instrumental in globalizing the standardization activities of ASTM,” said Katharine Morgan, ASTM International president. “His contributions through both committee work and board participation have truly reflected the ASTM mission of helping our world work better.”

Paroli has served in his current position since 2020, having previously held several positions at NRC, including director of research and development in metrology, director of the building envelope and structure program, director of the urban infrastructure program, and director of building envelope engineering and materials. He has been involved with spectroscopy and thermal analysis for more than 30 years and roofing for 25 years.

Paroli chaired the roofing and waterproofing committee from 2008 to 2013 and has been chair of the cannabis committee since 2017. He also served on the ASTM International board of directors from 2011 to 2018, serving as board chair in 2016.

In addition to ASTM International, Paroli is also a member of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Society of Canada, Canadian Society for Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy, Society for Applied Spectroscopy, and International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants. He is the past-president of both the Spectroscopy Society of Canada and Canadian Thermal Analysis Society.
