Participation on ASTM Technical Committees & ASTMs Training Courses: Valuable Resources for Professional Engineer License Renewal

ASTM International Technical & Professional Training (TPT) courses and participation on ASTM International technical committees can help professional engineers satisfy their Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Professional Development Hour (PDH) requirement for license renewal.

Over 30 state licensing boards have a continuing education requirement for professional engineers to renew their licenses. In all of these states, ASTM TPT courses should qualify for PDH credit towards license renewal. The term "should" is used because most states do not pre-approve training courses or providers for PDH credit. A review of the various state rules on what types of courses will qualify for PDH credit indicates that ASTM TPT courses satisfy the requirements in all states.

Five states pre-approve providers of continuing education for professional engineer PDHs. ASTM International is an approved provider in all five states: Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, and North Carolina. Approved provider status for ASTM International means that engineers know in advance that ASTM TPT courses will be accepted by their licensing boards for PDH credit.

Engineers in 26 states also receive PDH credit for ASTM International membership and participation on ASTM technical committees. Most states give credit for "active participation" on a committee. Some states only require membership in a professional society to receive PDH credit, and one state only gives credit if the engineer is an officer.
