Northrop Grumman’s Harvey Hack Honored with ASTM International 2019 Cavanaugh Award

Harvey P. Hack, Ph.D., Northrop Grumman Fellow with Northrop Grumman’s Undersea Systems received ASTM International’s prestigious William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award earlier today during the organization’s November standards development meetings in Houston, Texas.

The Cavanaugh Memorial Award honors the CEO of ASTM International from 1970 to 1985. Cavanaugh established ASTM International as a world leader in developing and disseminating voluntary standards.

The nomination, submitted by the chairs of ASTM International’s committees on metals corrosion (G01) and additive manufacturing technologies (F42), noted that Hack should be recognized for his “protracted and meritorious service within the corrosion and additive manufacturing communities that has directly led to the development of high-quality and market response standards used to enhance the global relevance of the markets they serve.”

“Dr. Hack has championed consensus standards for the entirety of his professional career,” says ASTM International President Katharine Morgan. “His dedication to standards development and advancement, paired with his leadership in the corrosion and additive manufacturing industries make him an ideal recipient for the Cavanaugh Award.”

Hack has been with Northrop Grumman since 1996, having previously held positions in the Marine Corrosion Branch at the Naval Surface Warfare Center and as an exchange scientist at the United States Naval Academy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s in metallurgy and material science, both from Carnegie Mellon University and a doctorate in metallurgy from Penn State University.

Hack served on the ASTM International board of directors from 1995 to 2002, serving as chair in 2000.

In addition to ASTM International, Hack is a member and Fellow of NACE International and the Washington Academy of Sciences, a member of ASM International and the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC), and an active participant in the International Organization for Standardization.
