New Standard Will Support Classification of Spacecraft Vehicle Types
ASTM International’s commercial spaceflight committee (F47) has approved a new standard that will be used to help classify spacecraft vehicle types. The new standard (F3388) will be useful to space launch and reentry vehicle manufacturers and existing or prospective spaceports that are planning new facilities or support for new vehicles.
“The new standard will enable dialogue between launch and reentry vehicle operators, spaceports, and commercial space licensing officials using common criteria,” says ASTM member Lisa Rosenblum Loucks, president of Ascendant Spaceflight Services. “The standard will support initial discussions on compatible spaceport facilities and related licensing efforts.”
The task group that developed the new standard included representatives from several launch and reentry vehicle manufacturers, spaceport operators, and aerospace industry experts.
All interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of the commercial spaceflight committee.
