ASTM International Aviation Committee Revises Key Standard

ASTM International’s general aviation aircraft committee (F44) has revised their standard for systems and equipment in aircraft.

The newly revised standard (F3061/F3061M) covers the systems and equipment aspects of airworthiness and design for aircraft. Topics covered in the standard include electrical systems, environmental requirements, manual and automatic flight controls, and flight data and voice recording, among others.

According to ASTM International member Edward Estagin, the revised standard will allow aircraft manufacturers, suppliers, and regulators to have a clearer understanding on how to show and find compliance to regulations that address unsafe system operating conditions.

“The revised standard will ensure a level playing field for applicants seeking regulatory approval,” says Estagin. “This will also provide further guidance for regulatory authorities.”

Estagin notes that anyone who has an interest in helping to make aviation safer is welcome to participate in the standards developing activities of the general aviation aircraft committee.
