ASTM International Committee on Business Imaging Products Develops Color Printer Toner Usage Practice

Since 1998, when ASTM International Committee F05 on Business Imaging Products first approved standard F 1856, Practice for Determining Toner Usage for Printer Cartridges, there has been a rapid increase in the use of color in office printing. In order to address this important change, Subcommittee F05.04 on Electrostatic Imaging Products has developed F 2632, Practice for Determining the Toner Usage for Color Printer Cartridges.

ASTM F 2632 covers a procedure to determine the weight of toner used for printing a single page derived from an electrophotographic process. The practice can be used for the evaluation of new and remanufactured color toner cartridges and their components. Included in the practice are two full color figures that illustrate test target layouts for printer cartridges.

Toner usage is the amount of toner that is used per average printed page. The more toner used per page, the less number of pages that can be printed per toner cartridge.

“This practice will show differences in toner usage,” says John Wyhof, a consultant and F05.04 member. “Consumers can make purchase decisions based on the results. Manufacturers and sellers of toner cartridges will also use this test for showing the comparison toner usage of their products relative to competitive products.”

Wyhof says that all interested parties are welcome to join Committee F05 in its standards developing activities. “The committee needs qualified technical writers and experts in printer supplies,” says Wyhof.
