ASTM International Committee on Plastics Develops New Polypropylene Siding Standard

While the polymer-based siding industry developed around the use of polyvinyl chloride, the last two decades have seen the introduction and rise in use of polypropylene as a siding material. Because of this, siding producers and polypropylene suppliers began to discuss the need for an ASTM standard for this type of siding. These discussions have resulted in the development and recent approval of D 7254, Specification for Polypropylene (PP) Siding. The new standard was developed by Subcommittee D20.24 on Plastic Building Products, which is under the jurisdiction of ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics.

“D 7254 will be used in the building products industry in the areas of product design, manufacturing, testing and installation of polypropylene siding,” says Randall Elinski, director of materials engineering, CertainTeed Corporation, and chair of the task group that developed the standard.

Specification D 7254 establishes requirements and test methods for materials, impact strength, appearance, surface flame spread, and windload resistance of siding products manufactured from polypropylene materials. Elinski notes that likely users of the standard include polypropylene siding producers, PP and related additive materials suppliers, and building code and regulatory officials.
