A recently approved ASTM International standard recognizes new state of the art technology for reinforcing glued laminated timber beams. The standard, D 7199, Practice for Establishing Characteristic Values for Reinforced Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) Beams Using Mechanics-Based Models, was developed by Subcommittee D07.02 on Lumber and Engineered Wood Products, under the jurisdiction of ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood.
 
Practice D 7199 covers mechanics-based requirements for calculating characteristic values for the strength and stiffness of reinforced structural glued laminated timbers manufactured in accordance with applicable provisions of ANSI/AITC A190.1, Structural Glued Laminated Timber. In addition, the practice describes a minimum set of performance-based durability test requirements for reinforced glulam.
 
“Practice D 7199, together with the ICC Evaluation Service’s AC 280 (Acceptance Criteria for Fiber-Reinforced-Polymer Glued-Laminated Timber Using Mechanics-Based Models), will provide a basis for manufacturers to introduce new reinforced glulam products into the marketplace,” says Thomas Williamson, vice president, quality assurance and technical services, APA-The Engineered Wood Association. While manufacturers of glued laminated timber will be the most obvious users of D 7199, Williamson says that research organizations and regulatory agencies that deal with lumber products will also find the practice helpful.
