Key ASTM International Committee’s Top Annual Award Presented to William Mihalko

ASTM International’s committee on medical and surgical materials and devices (F04) presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Dr. William M. Mihalko, University of Tennessee and the Campbell Clinic, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards. 

Mihalko was recognized for outstanding leadership and high productivity in fostering the development and promotion of surgical implant standards in the committee.

A member of ASTM International since 2004, Mihalko was also awarded the Joseph S. Barr Award (2011), the Certificate of Appreciation (2012, 2014, and 2015), and the Manny Horowitz Award (2016). 

Mihalko is a professor and J.R. Hyde chair at the Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee. He has previously held positions at Syracuse University, the University of Buffalo, and the University of Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Rochester, a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the Medical College of Virginia, and a medical doctorate and a Ph.D in biomedical engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University. 

In addition to ASTM International, Mihalko is a member of the Knee Society, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the Hip Society, and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
