Jack Tosdale Receives ASTM Award of Merit, Becomes ASTM Fellow

A 2006 ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow recognize the contributions of Jack Tosdale, principal engineer at ATI Wah Chang in Albany, Ore., to ASTM standards activities. Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys cited Tosdale for his outstanding contributions to the industry through working on standards that have made an impact.

Tosdale lives in Salem, Ore.

An ASTM International member since 1990, Tosdale serves as chair of Subcommittee B10.02 on Zirconium and Hafnium, as the B10 liaison to Subcommittee E01.06, and on a number of other B10 standards development groups. In addition he participates in the activities of Committees E04 on Metallography, E07 on Nondestructive Testing, E28 on Mechanical Testing, and F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices.

Tosdale has made significant contributions to new standards and has been responsible for major revisions to introduce new grades of materials in existing specifications. He has also been instrumental in ensuring that B10 standards are technically current and relevant to today's market. In addition, Tosdale has played a significant role in the success of B10's international symposia on zirconium in the nuclear industry.

In his career, Tosdale has focused on nuclear fuel fabrication and the application of zirconium, titanium, niobium, and hafnium in the nuclear, corrosion, and medical industries. Before joining the ATI Wah Chang staff, he held positions at United Nuclear Corp. and at Ames Laboratory.

A graduate of Michigan Technological University with a B.S. in metallurgy, Tosdale earned his M.S. in metallurgy at Iowa State University. He is a past member of ASM International and a past member of the American Society for Quality.
