Howard Hime is Elected Chairman of ASTM International Committee on Ships and Marine Technology

Howard Hime, Chief, Office of Standards Evaluation and Development, U.S. Coast Guard, is the new chairman of ASTM International Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology.  The committee has approximately 200 members who oversee more than 170 standards that cover the design, construction, operation and repair of marine vessels, structures, systems, equipment and materials.

Hime, who joined ASTM International in 1991, is active in several F25 subcommittees and serves as chair of Subcommittee F25.80 on International Standards. The committee has honored him with the John Haas Memorial Award and ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow for his outstanding leadership and contributions. 

In his current position, Hime is responsible for the development of all U. S. Coast Guard regulations relating to marine safety, security and environmental protection.  Under his leadership, the Coast Guard has adopted more than 450 industry standards, 180 of which are ASTM International standards. 

A registered professional engineer, Hime received the National Society of Professional Engineers U. S. Coast Guard Engineer of the Year award for his efforts in developing and promoting the use of standards.  He is also the recipient of the Dedicated Service Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Department of Transportation Secretary's Silver Medal for Meritorious Achievement and Award for Cost Avoidance, Reduction and Efficiency.
