Henry E. Francis Receives ASTM International Award of Merit

Henry E. Francis, laboratory services manager, Kentucky Geological Survey, at the University of Kentucky in Lexington has been honored with an Award of Merit from ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke. The ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow is the highest organizational honor for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

Francis was cited for "meritorious service and outstanding leadership of Committee D05, service to the ASTM Society, and service to the development and promulgation of standards of Committee D05 on Coal and Coke."

A member of ASTM International since 1977, Francis works on several D05 subcommittees. During his 15 years as chair of Subcommittee D05.24 on Statistics, he guided various task groups in the development of precision and bias statements, contributing to the publication of a number of new and revised standards. Committee D05 has recognized his contributions twice before, with the R.A. Glenn Award in 1994 and a Service Award in 1998. In addition to his D05 work, he also serves on Committees C01 on Cement, C07 on Lime, D19 on Water, E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials, and E11 on Quality and Statistics.

Francis began his career at the University of Kentucky's Institute for Mining and Minerals Research Laboratory in 1974 as manager of the Coal Analysis Laboratory. He then worked as manager of the Coal Analysis Research Laboratory in the department of chemical engineering before assuming his current role in 1988.

Outside of ASTM International, Francis is a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, and the International Association of Geoanalysts. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Western Kentucky University.
