Hany Demian of FDA Wins Major Award for Contributions to Standardization

Hany Demian, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s standards executive, will receive the 2018 Robert J. Painter Award which honors a standards leader who has given outstanding service in any field. The award will be jointly given by ASTM International and the Society for Standards Professionals (SES) at the SES annual conference in August in Nashville, Tennessee (USA).

ASTM International and SES recognized Demian for his efforts to support voluntary standardization in medicine, nanotechnology, and more.

“Hany has consistently sought opportunities to develop high-quality standards and to foster collaboration throughout many ASTM International committees,” says Katharine Morgan, ASTM International president. “His contributions are a testament to his character and his belief in the voluntary standards process.”

A member of ASTM International’s medical and surgical materials and devices committee (F04) since 1995, Demian previously won that group’s Robert E. Fairer Award (2000), Leroy Wyman Award (2008), Patrick G. Laing Award (2013), and 20-Year Service Award (2016). This past year, he was elected as a member-at-large for the committee. He currently leads the group’s planning subcommittee as well as groups focused on standards for bone cement, which helps anchor artificial joints in the space between a prosthetic and a bone.

He is also active in committees on nanotechnology (E56), flexible barrier packaging (F02), and additive manufacturing (F42). In addition, he serves as the liaison between F04 and E56 and has helped drive the creation of standards for polymeric materials, engineered medical products, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) of liposomes.

Demian joined the FDA in 1994 after serving as a biomedical engineer, senior biomedical engineer, master level reviewer, and senior standards advisor. He holds a bachelor’s degree in pre-med and a master’s degree in bioengineering from Clemson University.
