George D. Quinn, a ceramic engineer at the National Institute for Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., has received the Advanced Ceramic Award from ASTM International Committee C28 on Advanced Ceramics. C28 honored Quinn for his contributions to the group's work.

An ASTM International member since 1986, Quinn serves as member at large on the C28 executive subcommittee and on several C28 technical standards writing subcommittees. He is also a member of ASTM Committees E04 on Metallography, E28 on Mechanical Testing, E56 on Nanotechnology, F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, F34 on Rolling Element Bearings and G02 on Wear and Erosion.

In addition to ASTM International, Quinn is a member of the American Ceramic Society and ASM International (formerly the American Society for Metals).

Professionally, Quinn focuses on materials science and engineering, mechanical testing and fractography. He has been in the Ceramics Division at NIST since 1990 and previously held positions as an exchange scientist at the German Aerospace Research Laboratory in Cologne, Germany, and as a ceramic engineer for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Watertown, Mass.

Quinn has drafted 18 ASTM International, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and military standards and prepared three NIST Standard Reference Materials. In addition, he chaired the Versailles Advanced Materials and Standards working area for ceramics for 11 years.

Quinn graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., with a B.S.M.E. in mechanical engineering.
