European Paint and Coatings Industry Representative Named Chairman of ASTM International Technical Committee

John Fletcher, technical support manager at Elcometer Ltd. in Manchester, England, has been named chairman of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications.

For more than 100 years, ASTM Committee D01 has been a leading source of international standards, guides and test methods covering components of paint and related coating materials, on-site applied paint and coatings, factory-applied paint and coatings, and paint application.  The international composition of the committee includes more than 600 members from 40 different countries – including many European member states. European companies and organizations active in ASTM Committee D01 include AkzoNobel, BASF, Hilti, Gustav Grolman GmbH & Co. KG, Elcometer Ltd. and the British Coatings Federation.

“ASTM International is fortunate to have 1,500 members from Europe contributing to the technical quality and global relevancy of ASTM standards,” says James A. Thomas, president, ASTM International.  “We are excited to have one of our outstanding European members, John Fletcher, lead ASTM Committee D01 as it strives to continue meeting the evolving needs and expectations of the global paints and coatings industry.”

Fletcher has been a member of ASTM International since 2007.  He began his career as a development group leader at Mullard Hazel Grove Ltd. in Manchester in 1969.  Fletcher joined Elcometer Ltd., then known as Elcometer Instruments Ltd., in 1982. Over the next few years, he worked with coating test methods and equipment in various capacities at Elcometer and assumed the role of technical support manager in 1998.

Outside ASTM International, Fletcher is a member of the Society for Protective Coatings and he is a fellow of the Institute of Corrosion. He holds a higher national certificate (HNC) degree in electronics from Stockport Technical College and a professional diploma/certificate in management from Manchester Polytechnic, both in Manchester.
