Dr. S. Paul Singh Receives ASTM International Award of Merit

An ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow honor the standards development contributions of Dr. S. Paul Singh, a professor at the School of Packaging, Michigan State University (MSU), in East Lansing, Mich. The award is the highest society recognition given to individuals for their part in voluntary consensus standards activities.

Singh lives in East Lansing, Mich.

Co-chairman of ASTM Subcommittee D10.15 on Fragility Assessment, which is part of Committee D10 on Packaging, Singh has been involved with ASTM International activities since 1987. During this time he has been an active contributor to several standards and has initiated research projects that provide input for new standards and help in revising existing ones. His research work and conclusions have been widely published in the ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation.

Singh also leads Subcommittee D10.97 on University Liaison, a group he helped develop that  encourages future ASTM International membership for college and university students. He recently completed four years as chair of D10's Division I. During that time he introduced two new task groups on radio frequency identification to lead standards work in this current technology.

In addition to his ASTM International activities, Singh is a member of the boards of the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes and the International Safe Transit Association. He is also a member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals and the National Institute of Packaging and Handling Logistics Engineers.

Since 1985, Singh has been an MSU faculty member, and he focuses on transportation and packaging damage reduction. Prior to that, he was an engineer with International Business Machines. Singh earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Punjab University in Chandigarh, India, and both his master's in packaging and his Ph.D. in biosystems engineering from MSU.
