ASTM International Yorkdale Technical Paper Award Presented to Co-Authors Jeffrey H. Greenwald, David I. McLean, and Jason Thompson

Jeffrey H. Greenwald, P.E., David I. McLean, Ph.D., P.E., and Jason Thompson have won the 2005 Alan H. Yorkdale Award for their paper, "Effects of Confinement Reinforcement on Bar Splice Performance." The paper was published in the Proceedings of the 10th Canadian Masonry Symposium, a program held in Banff, Canada, in June 2005.

Greenwald is vice president of engineering and product development with the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association in Alexandria, Va. McLean is a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash. Thompson is a structural engineer with the National Concrete Masonry Association.

ASTM International Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units presents the award not more than once a year to the author or authors of the best paper concerning clay shale, concrete, or sand-lime masonry published in the English language. The award honors Alan H. Yorkdale, former Secretary of C15, member of Executive Committee of C15, Chairman of C15.02 for 18 years, who was a leading proponent of the advancement of masonry engineering and research in his 27 years of service with the Brick Institute of America.

Greenwald has been an ASTM International member since 1996 and serves on ASTM Committees A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys, C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, C12 on Mortars for Unit Masonry, C15, D04 on Road and Paving Materials, E05 on Fire Standards, and F33 on Detention and Correctional Facilities.

A member of the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Engineering Education, and the Masonry Society, McLean focuses on concrete and masonry structures in his teaching. Before joining the faculty of Washington State University, McLean gained professional experience as a structural engineer at the National Bureau of Standards and as an engineer for the Louisiana Department of Transportation.

An ASTM International member since 1998, Thompson works on Committees C12 and C15 as well as a number of subcommittees within those groups.
