ASTM International William C. Cullen Award Given to Richard Fricklas

Richard (Dick) Fricklas, an educator and author based in Centennial, Colo., has received the 2006 William C. Cullen Award from ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing. The committee honored Fricklas for his contributions and commitment to D08 and to the roofing and waterproofing industry.

Involved with D08 activities since 1969, Fricklas serves on numerous D08 subcommittees. He has been given the ASTM International Walter C. Voss Award, which is administered by a special committee, for notable contributions to knowledge in the field of building technology.

A lecturer at the University of Wisconsin programs on roofing technology who is currently assisting RCI, Inc. (formerly Roof Consultants Institute) with curriculum development, Fricklas is also a contributing editor of RSI Magazine and a columnist for the Buildings.com Web magazine. With coauthor Bill Griffin, Fricklas recently completed a new edition of the Manual of Low Slope Roofing published by McGraw-Hill.

In addition to ASTM International, Fricklas is an honorary member of the Roof Consultants Institute. Fricklas has received other honors, including the J. A. Piper Award from the National Roofing Contractors Association, the James Q. McCawley Award from Midwest Roofing Contractors, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from both The Educational Foundation of the Institute of Roofing and Waterproofing Consultants and from the Colorado Roofing Contractors Association.

Before retiring from full-time employment, Fricklas was technical director of the Roofing Industry Education Institute. He had previously held positions as director of the Built-Up Roofing Systems Institute (BURSI) and as a chemist for Johns-Manville and the Riegel Paper Corp.

A graduate of Hofstra University with a B.A. in chemistry and geology, Fricklas also earned an M.S. in physical chemistry from Rutgers University.
