ASTM International Standards Referenced by Turkish Standards Institution

The Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) has submitted its annual report to ASTM International outlining its use of ASTM standards over the past year.  TSE and ASTM signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in 2003.

The Turkish Standards Institute was established in 1954 and is the national standards body of Turkey.  TSE oversees quality and system certification, product and service site certification, personnel certification, laboratories, calibration, standard preparation, legal issues and research planning.

There are more than 8,000 Turkish national standards.  Since 2003, Turkey has adapted, adopted or referenced thousands of ASTM standards in the development of Turkish standards. Per the annual report, more than 1,000 ASTM standards were consulted by TSE for Turkish national standards this year.  Many of the standards referenced were from ASTM Committees D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and D18 on Water.

As part of the MOU program, interested individuals in Turkey have the opportunity to participate freely as full voting members in the ASTM standards development process; there are currently more than 160 ASTM members from Turkey.

Initiated in 2001, ASTM International's MOU program promotes communication between ASTM International and national standards bodies worldwide, fostering awareness of the standardization systems of all parties involved. The purpose of the program is to increase greater worldwide participation in the ASTM standards development process and facilitate the development of national standards that will aid health, safety, and environmental and economic conditions. More information on the MOU program can be found on the ASTM International Web site (www.astm.org/GLOBAL).
