ASTM International R. A. Glenn Award Given to Bruce S. MacDonald

 

Bruce S. MacDonald, a physical scientist in the standard reference materials program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., has received the R. A. Glenn Award from ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke. The award, given annually, recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the development of ASTM International standards relating to coal and coke.

MacDonald lives in Silver Spring, Md.

An ASTM International member since 1980, MacDonald serves on D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants in addition to D05.

At NIST MacDonald currently works with a variety of industries, government agencies, and NIST laboratory and statistical divisions in his work to develop and maintain standard reference materials for laboratories involved in measuring environmental and industrial materials. He has recently been awarded a U.S. Department of Commerce Science and Technology Fellowship and will get the chance to study national and international issues relating to the development, application, and management of science and technology, and science policy.

As an ASQ certified quality engineer and certified quality auditor, MacDonald has consulted for laboratories, mining organizations, educational institutes, utilities, and makers of reference materials. He had his own consulting business, Independent Quality Services, in Tampa, Fla., before joining the NIST staff. Prior to that role, he gained experience as supervisor of quality control for Electric Fuels Corp. in St. Petersburg, Fla., and as a manager for SGS Control Services in Baltimore, Md.

In addition to his ASTM International work, MacDonald is a member of the American Society of Quality. He has a B.A. in biology from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa.
