Today, global standards organization ASTM International has announced two key hires to support the organization’s global cooperation and international trade efforts. Craig Updyke will serve as the organization’s director of global policy and international trade in the Washington office, and Maria Jiverage will serve as the manager of global cooperation and training in ASTM’s global headquarters in West Conshohocken, PA.
“We are excited to grow ASTM International’s global understanding with two exceptional additions to our team,” according to Jeff Grove, ASTM International vice president, global policy and communications. “Together Craig and Maria have a depth of international experience and working knowledge of four languages to engage and assist our members and stakeholders worldwide.”
Updyke brings more than two decades of experience in international policy and trade matters to ASTM International. He served in roles of increasing responsibility in policy and trade issues for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), an ANSI-accredited standards development organization and trade association of electrical infrastructure and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Beginning in 2016, Updyke led NEMA’s international trade advocacy and market development activities as a resource for the association’s leadership and 325 member companies.
Prior to joining NEMA, Updyke was an associate editor for a Washington, D.C., based weekly newsletter on international trade policy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and German from the University of California, Davis, and a master’s degree in German and European studies from the School of Foreign Services of Georgetown University.
Before joining ASTM International, Maria Jiverage worked as CEO and director at the International Language and Consulting Services, Inc. She also held positions with several international organizations worldwide, including the Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) based in South Africa and the Peacebuilding Support Service at the United Nations Secretariat in New York.
Originally from Mozambique, Jiverage holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Zimbabwe, a post-graduate certificate in translation and intercultural studies from the University of Manchester, and a master’s degrees in international relations and public administration from Syracuse University. She is fluent in Portuguese and English.
