ASTM International to Launch UAE Chapter Sept. 23 in Dubai

ASTM International’s first international chapter will launch Sept. 23 in Dubai at the One & Only Royal Mirage from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the organization announced today. Registration information is available here: astmeventsme.com/dubai

According to organizers, the UAE Chapter will provide a forum for technical experts and others to network and to participate in standards-related activities.

The free event, sponsored by Knauf Middle East, will include remarks from Chapter President Rashid bin Fahad, Ph.D., a former ASTM International board member.

“Many engineers and technical experts in the UAE look forward to building on the already deep ties to ASTM International through this new chapter,” Bin Fahad says. “Together we will support networking opportunities, outreach to university students, greater understanding of international standards in key sectors, and more.”

Other speakers include ASTM International’s 2019 board chairman Taco van der Maten, marketing manager at PANalytical in the Netherlands, as well as Katharine Morgan, ASTM International’s president.

In addition, Christopher Mathis, president of Mathis Consulting Co., will speak about building energy efficiency. Amer bin Ahmed, managing director of Knauf Middle East (part of the German-based construction company), will also speak. Both are ASTM International board members.

The chapter will focus on strengthening involvement of UAE technical experts in standards-related activities and events to help meet the region’s needs. The chapter will also encourage information sharing while fostering greater understanding of emerging trends and innovation.

Initially, organizers plan to foster dialogue on standards related to construction, sustainability, energy efficiency, and related topics. Chapter membership is free through 2019.

Van der Maten says, “I’m delighted to welcome technical professionals to this new chapter launch. The engagement with ASTM International in the UAE has grown dramatically in recent years, so it is clear that the establishment of this chapter will enrich everyone involved.”

ASTM International holds memorandums of understanding with all the individual Gulf Standardization bodies as well as the regional body the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO). Hundreds of ASTM International members and customers are based in the Gulf.

Soon after the launch, a Standards and Codes for Sustainable Construction workshop will be held Sept. 25 in Kuwait with ASTM board chairman Taco van der Maten, marketing manager at PANalytical, giving the keynote speech. The event ends a five-year series of conferences, training programs, and site visits; the cooperation will continue to further integrate and codes and standards in the region.

ASTM International has partnered with the International Code Council through the Market Development Cooperator Program at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration for the five-year program. For more information, go to astmeventsme.com/kuwait.
