The 2006 Gary M. Kralik Distinguished Service Award honors the contributions of Douglas K. Gross, retired manager of technical and marketing services for Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys. Committee B02 cited Gross for his insight and contributions to Subcommittee B02.04 on Zinc and Cadmium and for his leadership as chairman of two B02 groups, Subcommittee B02.02 on Refined Lead, Tin, Antimony, and Their Alloys, and Subcommittee B02.95 on International Zinc Standards.

Gross is a resident of Burlington, Ontario, Canada.

In addition to B02, where he continues to serve as chair of B02.02 and B02.95, Gross is a member of Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products. He joined ASTM International in 1987, and he is also a member of the American Foundryman Society and the North American Die Casting Association.

A professional engineer registered in Ontario, Gross began his career with Cominco Ltd., now Teck Cominco Metals Ltd., following his graduation from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute with a degree in metallurgy. After holding a number of technical positions, Gross was senior technical service engineer before assuming his current position in 1998. He retired from Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. at the end of 2006.

In his most recent role, Gross focused on virtually all technical areas related to zinc and lead, including research on lead and zinc processing. He worked on market development for zinc products and for a number of years had been part of the Technical and Marketing Services team, which provides support for the sale of refined metal products. At the time of his retirement, Gross was the team manager.
