Thomas J. Summerson, a consultant based in Spokane, Wash., has received the Francis L. LaQue Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee G01 on Corrosion of Metals.  Summerson was cited "for his contributions in the development of corrosion control standards for aluminum and its alloys; for his outstanding achievements in the application of aluminum alloys in industry; and in recognition of his high level of integrity, fairness, technical and leadership expertise."

Summerson, who serves on Committees A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products and  B07 on Light Metals and Alloys as well as Committee G01, has been involved with ASTM International activities for more than 50 years.  He has served as chairman of several G01 subcommittees and received a Certification of Achievement from the committee in 1979.  In 1987, Committee G01 honored him with the Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow, ASTM's highest recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

After receiving his M.S. in physical chemistry and metallurgy from the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, in 1952, Summerson joined the staff at Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane.  He spent more than 40 years working in various research and development positions focusing on the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys at Kaiser before retiring in 1996. 

A licensed professional engineer in the state of California, Summerson holds a B.S. in chemistry from Whitworth College, Spokane, Wash.  In addition to ASTM, he is a member of the American Society for Metals (ASM).
