ASTM International Honors Nicholas Roberts with James A. Thomas President’s Leadership Award

Nicholas John Roberts, sergeant for the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, was awarded the 2020 ASTM International James A. Thomas President’s Leadership Award.

The President’s Leadership Award recognizes individuals early in their ASTM International career who have significantly advanced ASTM’s mission through extraordinary accomplishment, example, and vision. The award is given in honor of James A. Thomas, who served as ASTM International president from 1992 to 2017. 

A member of ASTM International since 2015, Roberts is being recognized for his significant contributions to the development of standards for the ASTM International committee on homeland security applications (E54). He has previously been recognized by the committee with the Award of Merit (2018). 

Roberts has 44 years of experience in public service and has been in his current position since 2010. He previously served in the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Riverton Police Department, and the Salt Lake City Fire Department. He has received several awards for his service, including the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year (1995), Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office Distinguished Service Medal (2001), and Unified Police Department Chief’s Award (2013).

Roberts has been working on two associate’s degrees in police science from Salt Lake Community College and Suffolk County Community College and a certification in police administration from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. In addition to ASTM International, Roberts is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, Utah State Employees Association, and the Inter-Agency Board.
