ASTM International Harold DeWitt Smith Memorial Award Honors Work of Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi

The 2004 ASTM International Harold DeWitt Smith Memorial Award honors the work of Behnam Pourdeyhimi, Ph.D., in the field of textile and fiber materials science and engineering. Pourdeyhimi, who lives in Cary, N.C., is the Klopman Distinguished Professor of Textile Materials and Associate Dean for Industry Research and Extension, and Director, Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center at the College of Textiles, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.

ASTM International Committee D13 on Textiles cited Pourdeyhimi for significant contributions to education, research and the nonwovens industry; for characterization, instrumentation, measurement, and analysis of nonwoven and other fibrous structures, and for successful and innovative management and leadership of a university-industry nonwovens consortium at North Carolina State University.

Author or co-author of books and chapters in them, Pourdeyhimi has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals, given over 100 conference presentations, delivered dozens of workshop presentations, and developed a number of analysis software packages.

Pourdeyhimi is a member of the Fiber Society, Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) Technical Advisory Board, the INTC (International Nonwovens Technical Conference) Organizing Committee, and the Technical Association for the Pulp and Paper Industry. He is also associate editor for Computer Medical Imaging and Graphics, a reviewer for the ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers) Conference, and for Ars Textrina, the Textile Research Journal, the Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, the Journal of the Textile Institute (UK), the Journal of Cells and Biology, the Journal of Miscroscopy, and the Journal of Orthopedic Research.

Before joining the faculty of North Carolina State University, Pourdeyhimi was a professor at George Institute of Technology. After earning his Ph.D. in textiles from the University of Leeds in Leeds, Britain, Pourdeyhimi also held positions at the University of Maryland, Cornell University, and the Airedale and Wharfedale College of Further Education.
