ASTM International Composite Materials Committee Honors John Gillespie with Stinchcomb Award

John W. Gillespie Jr., Ph.D., director of the Center for Composite Materials and the Donald C. Phillips Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware, Newark, has been honored with the 2016 Wayne W. Stinchcomb Memorial Lecture Award by the ASTM International committee on Composite Materials (D30).

The award recognizes outstanding contributions in research, engineering, or teaching the technology of composite materials and other contributions to the field of composites. Gillespie’s honor noted in particular his mentoring of his students. He gave the lecture at the American Society for Composites conference last September.

Gillespie has been director of the Center for Composite Materials since 1996, and with the center and at the university in various capacities since 1981. His work includes advising numerous doctoral and master’s candidates, managing the Center for Composite Materials, increasing participation in the center’s university-industry consortium, overseeing research, and writing or co-authoring hundreds of publications about composites science and technology.

In addition to ASTM International, Gillespie has served on several advisory and editorial boards, and been involved with the work of a number of industry associations. He is a fellow of the American Society for Composites, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, and has received several honors and awards for his papers and research.
