Jack Sanders, contamination control engineering lead at Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies Inc. in Greenbelt, Md., is the new chairman of ASTM International Committee E21 on Space Simulation and Applications of Space Technology.  The committee consists of approximately 35 members who oversee more than 55 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards.

A resident of Ellicott City, Md., Sanders has been a member of ASTM International since 1993.  In addition to his duties as chairman of ASTM Committee E21, he also serves on Subcommittee E21.05 on Contamination.

Sanders began his career as a metallurgical engineer at Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1974.  He went on to hold engineering positions at Rotorex Corp. and JHU/APL before joining the staff at Swales Aerospace, where he spent more than ten years as senior contamination engineer and manager.  He assumed his current position at Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies Inc. in 2007.  The focus of Sanders' work is contamination control engineering of space systems, including the geosynchronous environment and the contamination effects of extreme ultraviolet and X-ray instruments. 

A graduate of Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., where he received a B.S. in materials science and engineering, Sanders also holds a master's degree in administrative science from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.
