ASTM International Committee on Soil and Rock Presents Top Annual Award to Tuncer Edil

ASTM International’s committee on soil and rock (D18) presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Tuncer Edil of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards. 

Edil was recognized for his long and distinguished service to ASTM International and the committee in symposium and publication activities of special benefit to the committee, authoring standards, and research leading standards development. 

A member of ASTM International since 1984, Edil has been previously awarded the Technical Editors Award (2013) and the Special Service Award (1997, 2001, and 2013), both by the committee on soil and rock (D18). He has also received the Standards Development Award (1992, 1996, 2013, and 2017) and currently holds the Woodland G. Shockley Award. 

Edil, a professor emeritus – University of Wisconsin – Madison, has held his position since 2013, previously serving as an assistant, associate, and full professor at the university. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey and received a doctorate degree in civil engineering from Northwestern University.  

In addition to ASTM International, Edil is a member of the Transportation Road Board (TRB) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
