ASTM International Board of Directors to Hold October Meeting in New York City

New York City will be the site of the 2011 fall meeting of the ASTM International board of directors. The ASTM board meetings, as well as other events, will take place in the Big Apple on October 23-26, 2011.

The 25-member ASTM International board of directors comprises top industry and government executives engaged in standards activities, including senior executives from leading global companies such as Fisher-Price, the Coca-Cola Co., Walt Disney and Dow Corning Corp.; regulatory personnel such as the chief of the Standards Services Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology; the standards executive for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and standards leaders from Germany and Japan.

“New York City is a hub of global commerce and world trade and an excellent host city for our board of directors,” says ASTM International President James A. Thomas. “Meeting here allows ASTM's leadership to engage many of the industries that rely on ASTM standards headquartered in or near the New York metropolitan area. ASTM standards are recognized by buyers and sellers around the world as the technical foundations of product quality and safety.”

In addition to the formal board sessions, which begin on October 23, ASTM board members and staff will meet with the leadership of trade associations and corporations from the various industry sectors in which ASTM standards are globally influential: metals, energy, chemicals, building construction, manufacturing and more. To date, more than 40 separate outreach visits are scheduled with representatives from industry, government and academia, as well as with non-governmental organizations.

The slate of events taking place at the Grand Hyatt New York will also include a workshop for ASTM members residing in the New York City area. The program, scheduled in two, two-hour sessions, will showcase aspects of ASTM International’s advanced electronic tools, standards development process, policy perspectives and more.

New York City will be joining other world-class cities as a destination for the ASTM Board. Past meeting locations include Beijing, Berlin, Mexico City, Stockholm, Tokyo, Toronto and Washington, D.C.  For more information on the ASTM board of directors meeting in New York City, contact Anthony Quinn, ASTM International (phone: +1 202-223-8484; aquinn@astm.org).
