ASTM International Board of Directors to Hold October Meeting in London

London will be the site of the 2012 fall meeting of the ASTM International board of directors. The ASTM board meetings, as well as other events, will take place Oct. 14-17, 2012.

The 25-member ASTM International board of directors comprises industry and government executives engaged in standards activities, including senior executives from leading global companies such as Dow Corning Corp., Mattel/Fisher-Price, the Coca-Cola Co. and Disney, as well as regulatory personnel from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“London is an excellent host city for our board of directors,” says ASTM President James A. Thomas. “ASTM International is fortunate to count hundreds of members − as well as thousands of users − from the United Kingdom. Meeting in London presents excellent opportunities for our board and senior staff to engage our members and stakeholders and forge new relationships and initiatives that advance the global mission of ASTM International.”

In addition to the formal board sessions, which begin on Oct. 14, ASTM board members and staff will meet with the leadership of trade associations and corporations from the various industry sectors in which ASTM standards are globally influential: metals, consumer products, chemicals, building construction, manufacturing and more. To date, some 20 separate outreach visits are scheduled with representatives from industry and government, as well as with non-governmental organizations.

The slate of events taking place in London will also include a workshop entitled, Achieving Low Carbon Construction in Buildings – The Importance of Standards. The half-day program, to be held on the morning of Oct. 16, will be co-hosted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and ASTM International. The workshop line-up includes speakers from Armstrong World Industries Inc., Arup, the BRE Group, CIRIA and NIST, who will discuss the increasingly important issue of reducing carbon emissions. Topics will examine the role of engaging stakeholders in standardization, developing energy efficient products and research and development in achieving low carbon construction in buildings.

The workshop is the fifth in a series of such co-sponsored events held in tandem with ASTM board of directors meetings in various locations. London joins other world-class cities as a destination for the ASTM board. Past meeting locations include Beijing, Berlin, Mexico City, New York City, Stockholm, Tokyo, Toronto and Washington, D.C.
