ASTM International Award of Merit Recognizes Contributions of Jeffrey F. Speck

Jeffrey F. Speck, vice president of sales and marketing for Big River Industries in Alpharetta, Ga., has been recognized with an ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow, the highest ASTM honor for individual contributions to standards activities.

ASTM Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units cited Speck "For exceptional dedication, vision, and continuous practical contribution to the testing standards and specifications originating in ASTM International Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units, related to the manufacture and use of units of fired clay and shale, concrete, and sand-lime units."

Speck lives in Kennesaw, Ga.

An ASTM International member who joined the organization in 1986, Speck serves C15 as member-at-large for the C15 executive subcommittee and is particularly involved with the work of Subcommittee C15.03 on Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units. Speck has also been both the C15 membership secretary and recording secretary. Within Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, he is chair of Subcommittee C09.21 on Lightweight Aggregates and Concrete. Speck is also a member of Committee C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry.

At Big River Industries, Speck focuses on the promotion, sales and marketing of concrete and masonry, with particular emphasis on lightweight aggregates; in addition, he has experience with materials testing and structural engineering design. Before joining Big River Industries, Speck held positions with the Georgia Concrete and Products Association, the Portland Cement Association, Jack Lynch and Associates, and Professional Service Industries.

A fellow of the American Concrete Institute, Speck is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Masonry Society. Speck earned his B.S. and M.S. in civil engineering from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.
