ASTM International Award of Merit Given to Ian R. Chin of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Assoc.

For his contributions to ASTM Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units, Ian R. Chin, vice president and principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates in Chicago, Ill., has received a 2005 ASTM International Award of Merit and the accompanying title of fellow. The honor is the highest Society recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.

Chin, who also lives in Chicago, Ill., is a licensed architect and engineer in several states, and focuses on investigating structural engineering problems in buildings and formulating repairs for such problems.

An ASTM International member since 1986, Chin works on Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, C18 on Dimension Stone, C24 on Building Seals and Sealants, and E06 on Performance of Buildings. His service to C15 includes standards development related to masonry serviceability and the practical application of C15 standards as well as second vice chair of the committee. He has also written technical papers published in ASTM Special Technical Publications as well as reports related to his masonry expertise.

Outside ASTM International, Chin is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois. A past chairman and member of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, Chin also assisted the City of Chicago in the development of the city's building code.

Chin holds a bachelor of architecture and a master of science in structural engineering from the University of Illinois.
