ASTM International Announces New Online Education and Training Courses

ASTM International has announced new OnDemand training development on building enclosure test standards with the support of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.

ASTM International (ASTM) and Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) will collaborate to create a series of online education and training in building enclosure performance test standards and methodology through live demonstration and self-directed e-learning technical content. The courses are focused primarily on testing related to structural, air, water, and thermal performance, including the fundamentals of heat, air, and moisture transport.

The upcoming eLearning courses will offer practitioners training in the test standards and methodology that underpin Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx). The standards to be included in this program will be drawn from ASTM’s Standard Practice for BECx (E2813) and Standard Guide for BECx (E2947). Developed together and first published a decade ago, these two standards are now the framework by which BECx is delivered in North America, and are included by reference in both mandatory and voluntary building codes and standards across the U.S.

“Functional performance testing is not simply a ‘pass-fail’ exercise” commented Daniel J. ‘Dan’ Lemieux, FAIA NCARB RIBA MRICS, Director and Principal of WJE and a chair serving ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings. “The appropriate selection, use, and application of functional performance testing and, more critically, the ability to accurately interpret those results, relies heavily upon a fundamental understanding of building science and the physics of building enclosure and whole-building performance.”

This program will reinforce that relationship and offer the training and continuing education necessary to deliver more consistent, accurate, and quantifiable performance in our built environment.
