ASTM International and APEC to Hold Plastics Pollution Workshop

ASTM International is conducting a workshop on reducing plastics pollution, in Seattle, Washington on Aug. 7, 2023.

The event will occur in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation's (APEC) third ministerial meetings, and as a component of the Subcommittee on Standards and Conformance program.

This workshop is the first of two planned for a new ASTM project titled, “Assisting Policy Makers with Mitigation and Prevention of Plastics Pollution – Standards as a Resource for the Policy Framework.” This project supports stakeholders by identifying a science-based toolkit to build a policy framework for managing plastics and mitigating plastics pollution, as the issue increasingly affects economies worldwide.

The opening keynote will be given by Susan Fife-Ferris, director, solid waste planning and program management, City of Seattle, Seattle Public Utilities, and speakers from several economies including Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, United States, and Viet Nam. Andrew Stephens, senior policy advisor, foreign agricultural service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, will deliver the closing keynote.

The full-day workshop will cover the topic’s major themes, including:

  • Successes and challenges in working with governments to develop best practices to address plastics pollution,
  • Standards as the foundation for compliance measures of domestic commitments and the basis for managing data, and
  • A look at how the private sector is making contributions to the range of solutions for mitigating and eliminating plastics pollution.
