Alex T. Lau Receives ASTM International Award of Merit

Alex T. Lau, fuels blending and process analytics technical advisor in the engineering services division of Imperial Oil Ltd. in Ontario, Canada, has received an ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow.  The Award of Merit is the highest organizational honor for individual contributions to standards activities.

Lau was cited "for outstanding contributions in Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and coordinating Subcommittee D02.94 on Quality Assurance and Statistics toward standards development both as an individual contributor and leader."

An ASTM International member since 1991, Lau works on several D02 subcommittees and serves as chair of Subcommittees D02.94 and D02.01.0B on Precision and vice chair of Subcommittee D02.25 on Performance Assessment and Validation of Process Stream Analyzer Systems for Petroleum and Petroleum Products.  Committee D02 has honored him with an Award of Appreciation and two Awards of Excellence for his contributions.  He is also a member of Committees E11 on Quality and Statistics, where he is vice chair of Subcommittee E11.30 on Data Analysis, and E36 on Laboratory and Inspection Agency Accreditation.

A graduate of the University of Toronto where he received a bachelor's degree in applied science and engineering physics, Lau held various technical, statistical and quality assurance specialist positions at Stelco Inc., ExxonMobil and Imperial Oil before assuming his current role in 2004.  His career has focused on process analytics engineering, operations and technical advising as well as quality assurance and standardization for the measurement and manufacture of fuels.

Outside of ASTM International, Lau is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ).  He is a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Canada, and an ASQ certified quality engineer.
